Tourism: a massive economic driver

The international tourism arrivals have been increasing consecutively over the past eight years, making 2017 a year of excellence for the world tourism: 1323 million international tourist arrivals, 84 million more than the previous year.

This rising increases the relevance of the tourists and companies awareness and the creation of policies based on social and environmental sustainability and on the economic and social benefits of the populations.

Every day, more than 3 million tourists cross international borders. Every year, almost 1.2 billion people travel abroad. Tourism has become a pillar of economies, a passport to prosperity, and a transformative force for improving millions of lives.

António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General

TOURISM IN NUMBERS

In recent years, the tourism and travel sector has sought to respond to the demand of travellers and tourists, turning to technological and digital media that are increasingly innovative, as well as increasing the cultural, heritage and social value of the countries.

This is also one of the largest economic sectors in the world, contributing to job creation and to the exports.
In 2016 tourism accounted for 10.2% of GDP, 262 million jobs, 6.6% of total world exports and almost 30% of total global exports of services.

China, the United States of America, Germany, the United Kingdom and France are the world’s top tourism spenders.

Enacting pro-growth travel policies that share benefits more equitably can foster a talent and business environment necessary to enable Travel & Tourism to realise its potential. In doing so, not only can we expect the sector to support over 380 million jobs by 2027, but it will continue to grow its economic contribution, providing the rationale for the further protection of nature, habitats, and biodiversity.

David Scowsill, Former President and CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC)

THE LEADER OF THE INTERNATIONAL TOURISM MARKET

The European Union (EU) continues to lead the international tourism market. And this is a major sector for Europe, it contributes 10% to EU’s GDP, comprising 26 million jobs.

According to the European Commission and UNWTO, in 2016 the EU received 500 million international visitors (40% of the world total), with international tourism revenues reaching 342 billion euros, 31% of world’s tourism gains.

2017 brought extraordinary results for Europe, registering an 8% growth over the previous year and surpassing the world average.

There were 671 million international tourist arrivals (51% of the world total) in 2017 and, according to UNWTO estimates, in 2018 there should be a growth between 3.5% and 4.5%.
