With the death of General Franco in 1975, Spain began its transition to a democratic regime, with the consequent legalization of political parties and with free elections, that took place in 1977.<\/h4>\n

In 1986, Spain joined the European Community (now the European Union) and was one of the founding members of the EU’s economic and monetary union in 1999.<\/h4>\n

Spain is a constitutional monarchy, with Philip VI as the current king. Like Germany, Spain is one of the most decentralized countries in the EU, however, the autonomy of Catalonia and the Basque Country has generated some political tension.<\/h4>\n

Madrid, as the capital of the country, is also the seat of the government and of the Spanish monarchy. With about 3.3 million inhabitants and a metropolitan area of 6.5 million inhabitants, Madrid spans the Manzanares River and is one of the most relevant centres of Spain, not only political but also economically and culturally.<\/h4>\n
